Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province and is the third largest city in China. Known in the West as "Canton", the food and the language of the area is still known as "Cantonese." As a major sea port, Guangzhou's history of more than 2000 years, is full of colour. The city was part of the so called "Maritime Silk Road"....

The Province of Guangdong, borders Hong Kong and  has a very interesting history.

Around the time of the birth of Christ, Guangdong was far away from the centre of ancient Chinese civilization which was located in the north China plain. It was then populated by peoples collectively known as the Hundred Yue.

It was about this time that Chinese administration in the region began with the expansionism of the Qin Dynasty. After having unified most of China, the Qin expanded southwards and set up Nanhai Commandery at Panyu, very close to what is now the city of Guangzhou (Canton).

This extended holiday takes you to see the most beautiful rural scenery in China that is easily accessible to Hong Kong.

 Highlights will include the spectacular rice terraces of Longsheng, the wonderful town of Yangshuo which is located on the banks of the famous Li River and of course, the opportunity to enjoy a cruise on the Li River, if you have not experienced this already.

Today, approximately 1,800 "diaolou"  are still standing. The "diaolou" served two purposes, housing and protection against forays by bandits...
