Visit Notre Dame Cathedral and the impressive French-style Post Office. Continue to the Reunification Palace. It was towards this building ¡V then known as the Independence Palace or Presidential Palace, that the first Communist tanks in Saigon rushed on the morning of 30 April, 1975. Once the symbol of the South Vietnamese government, the building is preserved almost as it was on that April day when the Republic of Vietnam, which hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese and 58,183 Americans had died trying to save, ceased to exist.  Next visit the War Remnants Museum, previously known as the Museum of Chinese and American War Crimes. This has become the most popular museum with Western tourists and few museums in the world so aptly illustrate that warfare is horribly brutal and that many of the victims are civilians. Continue to Cholon (China Town). Cholon rose to prominence after Chinese merchants began settling there in 1778 and, despite the mass migrations after 1975, still constitutes the largest ethnic-Chinese community in Vietnam.
