Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan
The
most important Silk Road cities of Central Asia are included in this tour,
namely Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, Kunya Urgench, Ashkabad and Mary to visit
the ancient cities of Merv.
Spend
the first day in the capital Tashkent. The following morning drive to Samarkand
for two nights. Sightseeing will include the most spectacular architectural
ensemble in Central Asia, the Registan Square and Tamerlane’s Tomb – the Gur
Emir. Then on to Bukhara, the Noble City, a Shakrizhabs, the birthplace of
Tamerlane.
Reputed
to be the oldest Islamic city in Central Asia, the muted khakis of the mud-walled
buildings of Bukhara are in restful contrast to the glitter of Samarkand.
The beauty of Bukhara’s Kelyan Minaret stopped even Ghengis Khan in his tracks,
although it did not prevent him from razing the rest of the city to the ground.
A full day is spent in Khiva, the most complete and best preserved of all
the Silk Road cities.
Continue
to Kunya Urgench in Turkmenistan where the tallest minaret in Central Asia
stands. From Ashkabad, the capital, proceed to Mary to visit the ancient cities
of Merv.
