THAILAND

Weekend in Bangkok

Bangkok is not, strictly, the capital¡¦s correct name, although universally used by foreigners. Thai¡¦s themselves call the city Krung Thep ¡V meaning ¡§the City of Angels¡¨.

The kingdom¡¦s capital is a wild and noisy city whose streets seem to be clogged with traffic almost around the clock and part of whose centre is garish with neon-lit strip clubs.  Unfortunately, serious unemployment has resulted in many of the poorer people finding work in marginal service industries, some of which have given Bangkok notoriety as the so-called ¡§sex capital of the world¡¨.

Despite this reputation, Bangkok is a vibrant capital and presents a unique blend of traditional and ultra-modern. Discover ornate Royal Palaces and dazzling Buddhist temples. Explore open-air markets and modern malls packed with souvenir bargains.
