Wilderness Log Rafting
A log raft of your own on the Klar River. The Klar River rises around Lake Femunden in Norway, runs quietly through Varmland and ends in the largest inland lake of Sweden, the mighty Vanern.
This is not only the last river in Sweden where timber is still floated, it is also one of the most beautiful waterways in the whole country. The river is lined with small villages, open fields, high mountains and wooded shores. Here is an atmosphere reminiscent of the adventure tales of our youth.
But why reminisce? The river is there. The logs are there. All you need is the right equipment, transportation to the right spot on the river, and basic knowledge of information on how to build a raft. All is offered.
Be like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn - experience the adventure of travelling on your own log raft.
The adventure starts with a rendezvous at Gunnerud, about 92 km. north of Karlstad at 1700 hours on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. The instructor explains the equipment, and you pack your own gear in the special cases. Your first night is spent in Gunnerud. The next morning you will be transported to the Branas, about 100 km. north to begin building the log rafts.
The rafts are constructed from logs 3 metres long, roped together and made large enough to be comfortable and practical. When the raft is finished, load the equipment and you are ready to set off sometime during the afternoon.
The Klar River flows at about 2 km. per hour. This means that you have ample time to study the wildlife and the landscape, to swim, fish or take a short walk. You might even meet with difficulties like running aground or getting stuck on a rock.
The nights are spent in tents ashore.
The journey ends at Gunnerud, where you return the equipment. Then the raft is dismantled and the logs are recycled. The entire arrangement takes a week (minimum age 15 or 3 when accompanied by an adult.)
Note 1: This is not a guided tour.
Note 2: The Klar River has the longest history of use as a professional logging route in Sweden and was used for this purpose until 1991. |Today you have the opportunity to keep this old tradition alive by building your own timber raft.
Cost: If there are two to four persons undertaking the raft trip for one week including camping equipment, the price is HK$2070 per person.
