A Mekong River Cruise in Southern Laos

 

"MV Vat Phou"         (Departs every Wednesday and Saturday from Pakse)

 

Day 1

 

Riverside scene.

The "Vat Phou" sets off downriver early in the morning.  Dock at Champassak for a guided tour of Vat Phou Temple.  Overnight on board at Champassak.

 

Day 2

Sunset over the Mekong River.

Arrival at Kong island and discover the "4,000 Islands" area.  After a short walk through the peaceful village of  Khong, continue by road [or by longtail boat depending on the season] to the roaring falls of Phapheng (or Somphamit).  Picnic on the riverbank.  Return to the "Vat Phou" to resume the cruise and enjoy dinner.  Overnight on board.

 

Day 3

Evening view over the River Mekong.

After a half-day relaxing cruise, past the villages, pagodas and fisherman's homes, dock at Oum Moung, a 12th century Khmer sanctuary, hidden in the tropical forest.  Return to the "Vat Phou" for dinner. Spend the night on board at Vat Phou Ngoy and enjoy the wonderful panorama of the Mekong sunset.

 

Day 4

View up the River.

Early in the morning, the "Vat Phou" returns up river to Pakse.
