|
| The Grand Hotel D' Angkor was first established in 1929 and restored
in 1997 by Raffles International. It is a grand historic hotel set in
60,000 sq. m. of lush landscaped gardens only 20 minutes drive from the
temple complex. Lunch and dinner are taken at the hotel. |
||
| Morning and afternoon sightseeing excursions
to explore the site of one of Asia's most magnificent archaeological ruins
- the religious citadels of Angkor Wat, Angkor Tom and Bayon Temple. Once
the visual centrepieces of a powerful 8th Century Kingdom, they were the
capital by the Thais in 1431. |
||
| The temples of Angkor, built between 7 and 11 Centuries, represent
one of the most impressive examples of man's creativity. From their dazzling
temple structures the rulers of Angkor controlled an empire which expanded
over 6 centuries to cover a region extending from present day Vietnam
in east to the shores of the Bay of Bengal in the west. |
||
| The estimated 100 temples, which constituted
the foundation for Angkor's administrative network, were made of timber
(long since decayed) as construction of buildings from stone or brick
was reserved solely for the Gods. |
||
| You will also visit Ta Prohm, built by King
Jayavarman Vl1, 1181-1219. There is hardly a temple anywhere else that
shows so clearly the destructive power of the luxuriant tropical vegetation.
When French archaeologists first discovered the site of the temple. they
left the giant trees standing, even though their huge roots were coiling
like snakes around the temple, penetrating its stonework and breaking
it up. JayavarmanVl1 had the monastery built as a residence for his mother
who had been deified as Prainaparamita. Ta Prohm looks rather like a smaller
version of Angkor Thom. |
