Venice Simplon Orient Express - 2015

This train service was first offered in October 1883, long before the advent of scheduled flights to Europe. The original route was Paris to Constantinople (Istanbul) via the Alps, Budapest and Bucharest. In England at that time many young men, on completing their university education, undertook a “Grand Tour” of Europe and this luxury train was considered the best way to get there. What better way to enjoy the rugged landscape of the Alps and the legends of the countries through which they passed.

Offering unheard of luxuries, such as soap by the wash hand basins, the train’s fame rapidly spread as reports swiftly came back of its exquisite food, excellent wine and impeccable service.

Soon the legendary train was carrying King’s and Queen’s as well as the nobility and politicians of the age. This legendary train continued to carry celebrities and the well heeled between great European cities up until its heyday - which is considered to be the 1920s.

Many of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express's current carriages date from this era. After World War II other forms of transport nudged it into decline. Its last service as a regular passenger train was in May 1977.

The Rebirth

A rail enthusiast, and luckily an entrepreneur as well, named James B. Sherwood was the saviour of the old carriages, he heard that they were languishing in a siding and were to be auctioned at Southeby’s. In 1977 he bought two of the train's carriages at the auction in Monte Carlo. The next few years and $16 million were spent locating, purchasing and restoring some 35 vintage carriages.

In May 1982 the legend was reborn when the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express made its maiden run from London to Venice. Today, the gleaming carriages of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express luxury train continue to transport passengers across Europe in exquisite surroundings on one of the most celebrated and romantic journeys in the world. It is now offering several choices of route, The Orient Express can take you to some of the iconic cities of Europe that includes London, Paris, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Bucharest, Istanbul, Warsaw, Krakow, Copenhagen and now even Stockholm.
