CAMBODIAThis kingdom, like much of the Far East, had very strong religious beliefs and there are many temples and shrines to attest to that. Indeed, it is home to the largest temple complex in the world, that of Angkor Wat, which is some 500 acres in area. There are some 100 other great sites all within 7 miles of this main one.

The city of Angkor was founded by Yasovarman I, who ruled 889-900. but the monument associated with Khmer greatness in the modern mind - Angkor Wat - was not built for another 200 years: Suryavarman II (ruled 1113-1150) built the Vishnu temple at Angkor Wat, marking the high point of Khmer civilization. The reign of Suryavarman II also marked the high point of Khmer territorial expansion.

After many years af gentle decay, the complex was “discovered” in the late 19th century by French naturalist Henri Mouhot. Angkor became the focus of academic interest after the publication of his book - Voyage à Siam et dans le Cambodge.

Recently, Cambodia suffered greatly as a result of the Vietnam war, when it was used to ferry weapons and ammunition from China to the south for Ho Chi Minh’s army.

More recently, efforts began at clearing away the rainforest that had threatened to devour the monuments; restoration efforts continue today, and the site is receiving high priority as a World Heritage Site.
